DIY Halloween Costume Ideas for Busy Parents
/I worked with Parents magazine to come up with easy DIY costumes for busy parents for their October issue …like these sweet donuts! I love working with Parents…and I love the concept of this story! I may be a professional crafter, but as a busy parent, quick and easy costumes have always been my go-to! Here are a few (messy) behind-the-scenes shots of my prep…but do click over to Parents to see all the pretty final photos!
Starting with a store-bought cardboard cake circle makes the donut costume easier than you’d think! Instructions here.
I used these fun “craft noodles” (which are made of cornstarch and are biodegradable) to make the sprinkles!
I cut the craft noodles in half the long way and hot glued them to the donut.
The gorgeous and talented Amber Kemp-Gerstel of Damask Love and her son, Markus, were the cover models…and stars of the whole story! Here she is wearing an easy snake necklace and headband that I made using black zip ties to hold the plastic snakes together or to the headband. My kind of quick and easy costume! Full instructions here.
Instructions for this no-sew baby shark costume is here.
And here is Amber’s adorable son, Markus, dressed up as the Lorax! Instructions here.
I cut the center out of a store-bought mask and glued on yellow fake fur eyebrows and whiskers. Super easy! (I can’t find the mask that I originally bought from Joann’s but here is a similar one from Michaels.) Full instructions on the Parents website.
Every little Lorax needs a Truffula Tree nearby! For Amber, we made a fashion-y reinterpretation of the puffy Truffula with a pom-pom necklace and headband. Full instructions here. You can use a mix of classic craft pom poms with these and these giant faux fur pom-poms!
Markus also dressed up as a dragon to match his mom’s Unicorn costume! Full instructions are here.
Happy Halloween….and happy costume-making!
